Ronald Reagan watched WarGames at Camp David in June 1983 and asked the chairman of the Joint Chiefs whether a teenager with a modem could really get into NORAD. The answer, a week later, was that it was worse than that. The exchange led to a security directive and then to the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act. Around it, Tron, Blade Runner and The Terminator fixed the pictures the public would use for artificial intelligence for the next forty years.
